Resignation letter from Meg Vasey

April 12, 2023

Dear Tradeswomen friends, colleagues, and allies,

After fourteen years I am stepping away from my position as Executive Director of Tradeswomen Inc. It has been my great privilege to serve this organization and this community.

Tradeswomen Inc. was established in 1979 and has gone through many iterations in its service to women in the skilled trades. It has assisted many tradeswomen, including me, in our careers working with the tools. When I became ED in 2009, we were in the first year of the Great Recession, TWI had no permanent staff, and there were 627 women in apprenticeship in California construction trades. After a decade of attacks and the passage of a California prohibition on affirmative action, the percentage of women had fallen to below 2%.

Today Tradeswomen Inc has 7 permanent staff positions, a robust and growing annual revenue stream, and there are 1,995 women in California construction apprenticeships. Additionally, with your backing and that of other allies, we have developed state and national support in both funding and legislation for women in the trades. We are excited to be one of the US DOL’s Women in Non-Traditional Occupations (WANTO) grantees as well as included in the upcoming State of California’s Equal Employment in Construction Apprenticeship (ERiCA) grants.

It has been a gratifying term.

However, not every barrier has been removed and the conditions for women in the field are still daunting. The next leader of Tradeswomen inc., working with all our partners to address these challenges, will take up this task anew. Fortunately, they will have solid resources at their disposal and the good will of all of you as inspiration.

So, as I leave this position, I implore all of you to help our organization find this next leader, the one with the passion, commitment, skills, and fortitude, the one ready to bring Tradeswomen Inc. to the next level of organization and leadership. Please reach out to anyone you may know with the abilities and inspiration to pilot the next phase, tell them about this opportunity, and encourage them to apply.

And may that new leader find the pride and purpose that, as the Executive Director of Tradeswomen inc., I have enjoyed.

With gratitude,

Meg Vasey
